Highlights of our causes in 2023
Derecho a la educación
We started the year with more than 244 million children and adolescents out of school. From the Global Campaign for Education we demanded a greater commitment to the financing of education, and, from La Silla Roja (The Red Chair,) under the slogan “Let us learn in Peace”, we focused on the educational consequences of the various crises that hit the planet.
As part of our commitment to guarantee access to education for the most disadvantaged groups, we continue with our “To Educate is to Include” program, facilitating the socio-educational integration of students with disabilities. in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. In Venezuela, thanks to the support of AECID and DG ECHO, a total of 12,125 students have been able to participate in a program of of 20 Fe y Alegría schools were able to continue their schooling. And in Colombia, we had the opportunity to give visibility to our peace education projects thanks to the visit of the singer-songwriter Rozalén and Beatriz Romero.
Migración y refugio
In 2023, the record number of 110 million refugees and displaced persons in the world was reached, taking into account the continuity of the conflict in Ukraine, Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the new civil war in Sudan. On the other hand, the chronification of political and economic instability in many Latin American countries increased the humanitarian flow, especially through the Darien Strait, where we traveled, with Fe y Alegría Panama and photojournalist Sergi Cámara, to portray one of the most dangerous routes in the world.
Within the framework of the negotiation of the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum, we added our voice to that of some fifteen organizations to call for a responsible and supportive European migration policy. We also held meetings with AECID and the Subdirectorate General for Territorial Cooperation and Educational Innovation to discuss the importance of Spanish cooperation to strengthen the education systems of host countries.
Justicia socioambiental
As part of our “Somos Amazonía” (We are Amazonia) campaign, together with Marita Bosch and Fátima Barbosa, we visited several Spanish locations to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the Amazon. The “Defensoras de la Naturaleza” exhibition reached more than 6,000 people in a dozen cities. From the Platform for Responsible Business (PER), we celebrated the approval of the basic text of the European directive on corporate due diligence. As members of the Xavier Network and together with JRS, we responded to the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey and, in coordination with the Diocesan Delegation for Migration (DDM), we provided support to the population affected by the earthquake in Morocco.
Equidad de género
From La LUZ de las NIÑAS (LIGHT of GIRLS) we met with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls, Reem Alsalem and we presented the report “Let us learn in peace: educational barriers and violence against girls in South Sudan”. Under the alliance NO QUIERO we launched a dossier entitled “I Don’t Want to… Stop Learning” about the challenges girls around the world face in going to school.
For the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we present together with Alboan the report “Invisibilizadas. Migrant women crossing borders” in the framework of the “Mujeres en Marcha” (Women on the Move) campaign.
Participación y ciudadanía global
The 12th edition of our “Run for a Cause” solidarity race was attended by 16,000 people in 25 cities. Our 23rd Annual Meeting, which brought together more than 200 people from Entreculturas and Alboan, focused on the importance of citizens having the channels and momentum to make themselves heard and transform injustices. This was also the central theme of the course at the Youth Solidarity Network.
In November we launched “Conectadas” (Connected), a campaign with which the entities of the Jesuit Social Sector in Spain put the finishing touch to the project “Digital and quality inclusion: reducing the digital divide for a fairer and more sustainable world”, financed with European Next Generation funds.
Our agreements and programs
Every year we work to solve educational problems common to several countries through programs that take place thanks to the support of companies or other institutions. Most of them are of medium or long duration and, therefore, manage to achieve a great impact on the populations we work with.
