Tenía 71 años cuando lo asesinaron. El P. López había nacido en El Salvador, en 1918. Al acabar sus estudios, viajó a México para ingresar en el noviciado de la Compañía de Jesús y fue allí también donde se licenció en filosofía y humanidades. Tras hacer profesión solemne como jesuita en 1956, el P. López inició su actividad docente y pastoral en San Salvador, donde impartía el catecismo a más de 20 mil niños y niñas de las colonias marginadas de la ciudad.

Basta observar las fotos para comprobar el estado en que ha quedado buena parte de El Salvador a causa de los fuertes vientos y las intensas lluvias que ha traído consigo el huracán Ida. Los deslaves y las riadas han sido la principal causa de que la cifra de muertos haya ascendido ya a 184 (y es probable que siga incrementándose en los próximos días a medida que se hagan efectivas las labores de rescate).

El huracán Ida es uno más de la docena de desastres que se han registrado en El Salvador en los últimos 20 años. El propio presidente, Mauricio Funes, ha reconocido la vulnerabilidad del país pues, en las zonas altas, son frecuentes los deslaves y, en las zonas bajas, son habituales las inundaciones; además, El Salvador se sitúa en una zona de alto riesgo sísmico lo que provoca terremotos y, en las zonas de costa, el azote de las mareas.

En Burundi hay una gran necesidad de mejorar la educación en términos generales. Por un lado, es muy necesario aumentar el acceso a la educación formal, tanto primaria como secundaria, y fundamentalmente, mejorar la calidad de esta educación. Esta es la razón por la cual, con la construcción de esta escuela, se pretende poner en marcha un modelo de educación de calidad para medios rurales, inspirado también en los valores de la Compañía de Jesús y los aprendizajes de la experiencia latinoamericana de Fe y Alegría. Esta escuela pretende ser el inicio de un modelo que se extienda a otros lugares en Burundi.

Miles de niños, niñas y adolescentes de todo el planeta son vinculados de forma directa a grupos armados a través del reclutamiento y de la utilización en diferentes oficios en el marco de la guerra. Para cualquier persona verse sometido en contra de su voluntad a cometer actos atroces, sufrir enfermedades, agotamiento físico, violencia sexual, heridas, torturas y enfrentarse a situaciones extremas que pueden tener desenlaces mortales, es una situación inhumana y, más aún, cuando se trata de niños, niñas y adolescentes en etapa de desarrollo.

Según destacó Javier Ojeda, portavoz de la Secretaría Técnica de la Campaña, en el acto de presentación "el continente africano afronta hoy un doloroso contraste: por una parte, posee una enorme riqueza y un gran potencial de desarrollo debido a la abundancia de sus recursos y a lo joven que es su población, ya que más de la mitad de los habitantes del continente africano son menores de 18 años; y, por otra, la mayoría de los países africanos ocupan hoy los últimos puestos del índice de desarrollo humano en el mundo y la esperanza de vida de sus habitantes sigue bajando cada año".

El pasado 18 de noviembre, el Consejero de Presidencia del Gobierno de La Rioja, Emilio del Río, mantuvo una reunión de trabajo con diversas ONG que llevan a cabo proyectos de desarrollo en beneficio de los niños y niñas de países desfavorecidos. Entreculturas, junto con otras organizaciones, fue una de las asistentes dada la importante labor educativa que lleva a cabo a través de Fe y Alegría y el Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados en América Latina y África, respectivamente. Óscar Valle, en calidad de Delegado de La Rioja, y Pepe Barrio -como responsable de proyectos en la Delegación-, fueron los encargados de representar a Entreculturas en dicho evento. El motivo de la reunión era la celebración del 20 aniversario de la Convención de los Derechos del Niño.

According to Javier Ojeda, spokesman for the Technical Secretary of the Campaign, "the African continent faces a painful contrast: on one hand it has an immense richness and a great development potential due to the abundance of resources and its young population, since most of its inhabitants are under 18 years old; on the other hand the majority of the African countries are at the end of the list in human development and life expectancy decreases every year".

Ramiro Viñuales, REDES spokesman, explained that " with this campaign, we demand that the Spanish Aid for Development allocated for Africa will be exclusively directed towards eradication of poverty regardless financial or geostrategic interests". It also pointed out the "forgotten illnesses" that affect millions worldwide, especially the poorer populations.

These two highlights are: the next session of the Commission on Women Declaration and Platform Action Beijing March 2010 (Beijing+15) and the potential approval of the Gender Plan in the External Action of the EU.

The Spanish Presidency en route to BEIJING+15

In March 2010 the revision of the Declaration of the Beijing Platform Action will be held in New York. In this context several Spanish cooperation agents participated to express their view and preparation for this revision.

In 1964 he worked in the campaign to approve the law for private universities, thanks to which the UCA could start to exist. When the UCA was founded he worked for the university as secretary of the Human and Nature Science Faculty. Fr, Lopez always considered himself part of the university community. He was always up to date with the university´s activities.

Just by looking at the pictures, one can see the consequences of the strong winds and heavy rains of the hurricane. The number of dead is now up to 184 and very likely to increase as the rescue work progresses.

The hurricane is yet another of the dozen disasters that has hit El Salvador over the past 20 years. President Mauricio Funes, has recognized the vulnerable situation of the country because of the landslides in the highlands and the floods of the lowlands; in addition to his, El Salvador has a high risk of earthquakes and high tides in the coast.

Fe y Alegría, our main local partner in El Salvador, reports that "some schools have been flooded, but this is not so bad compared to many citizens that have been left homeless. Thousands of houses have been destroyed and the high loss of life has been a tragedy".

Thousands of children and youth are directly recruited in armed groups and in other tasks around the framework of war. For any human being to be forced to do atrocious actions, suffer illness, physical extenuation, sexual violence, wounds, tortures and face extreme situations with life risk is an inhuman situation, more so, when talking about children and youth.

In Colombia´s armed conflict, it is estimated that one out of four fighters is under 18. " In October 2008,The Constitutional Court of Colombia reported that illegal armed groups were recruiting children in Colombia and the real magnitude of these recruitments was still unknown. The number of children that participate in armed groups in Colombia goes from 8.000, according to the Ministry of Defense to 11.000, according to non government sources. [...].A study carried out by the Colombian Citizen Defense and UNICEF showed that the average age of recruitment had gone down from 13,8 years to 12,8 in 2006.
